Obituary

George O. Hughes, 82 of Goodyear, Arizona died July 20, 2020 in Goodyear, Arizona. He was born October 13, 1937, to George O. Hughes and Arlene Hughes in Collingswood, New Jersey.

George worked as a Systems Technician for AT&T, until he retired in 1986. He was also a member of the Stratford and Laurel Springs Police Department, the Laurel Springs School board and city council. George attended the Peninsula Community Church in Selbyville, Delaware and managed Cedar Shores Condos in Delaware for many years. He was also an avid softball player and car enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Elaine Hughes, his daughters Doreeen Salmonsen and Diana Braun, his sons George Mitchel Hughes, Mark Hughes and David Hughes, his sister Jeanne Fallon, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.

The family suggests that if any donations would like to be made, to do so in George’s name to the charities of your choice.

  1. Loved having George as a neighbor and friend of our family in Laurel Springs. He will be missed by all hugs to all of the family. My pet name for him was old white Sox’s remember that great smile when I called him that. Love to all.

    1. We still referred to him as old white socks. Every once in awhile they would put black socks on him and I would have to change them. He knew what he liked. Elaine We had a great life together.

    worked together for about 25 yrs at Bell and played softball together. Have many fond memories of George and his family when we all lived in Laurel Springs. Our prayers and thoughts are with Elaine and her family through these difficult days. God bless you all.

  4. Those of us who worked with George at NJ Bell Telephone Co. and are still shuffling around were saddened to hear about his passing away. A great craftsman, sportsman, civic minded dedicated family man and mentor to many of us but, best of all our friend. On behalf of those of us who had the good fortune to work together and enjoy his company every day please accept our condolences and well wishes to the entire family. May he Rest in Peace

  5. George and Ed worked together and he was the one who got us to try out Delaware for a vacation. We loved it so much we moved down and enjoyed many great times with him and Elaine. We truly missed them when they moved. Will always remember his great smile and how he loved to win at playing cards. “Champion of the World” he would say. Know he is smiling down on his family.
