Obituary

Albert John Sheridan, 78 of Goodyear, AZ died January 30, 2021, in Phoenix, AZ.  He was born August 5, 1942, to Philip and Marie Sheridan in Chicago, IL.

Al earned his bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University and his Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from Case Western Reserve University.

He spent the bulk of his professional career as a management consultant and Vice President at LIMRA International, a Windsor, CT based research and consulting organization serving the financial services industry.  A brilliant researcher, he thrived on helping companies use research to create a competitive advantage.  In the later stages of his career, his interests turned to regulatory compliance and he led the creation of several LIMRA services designed to help companies ensure that clients were treated fairly and ethically.

Upon Al’s retirement, LIMRA awarded him the inaugural Al Sheridan Award for excellence in product development.  This award has subsequently been presented to individuals or teams who have demonstrated remarkable accomplishments in product development.

Al loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer, skier, hiker, runner and sailor.  After retiring, he and his wife Layne traveled the world.  He visited over 40 countries on six continents and was looking forward to checking off the seventh continent, Antarctica, once the COVID pandemic was over.  An avid animal lover, he was partial to dogs and carried dog treats in his pocket when he traveled so he could get his “dog fix” even when he was halfway around the world.

As Parkinson’s Disease took away his ability to do his favorite physical activities, he turned to trading stock options to keep his brain engaged.  He worked on studying markets and refining his strategies seven days a week.

He is survived by his wife Layne; son Kevin and his wife Pam; grandchildren Jenna Sheridan and Patrick Sheridan; Greyson and Parker Clancy whom he considered his grandchildren; sister-in-law Kathy Sheridan; nephews Phil Sheridan (Ann), Dan Sheridan (Kristen), and Michael Sheridan (Jen); and his four-legged children Rowdy and Rocky.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Philip Sheridan.

A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a time to be determined.

The family suggests that donations be made to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Very very nice. Al was a special guy and did whatever he put his mind to. He was a pleasure to be around and his intellect and interests were boundless. You always had fun and learned something when you hung out with Al.

  2. Dan Boyce says:

One of the brightest guys I ever knew. He could also light up a room and new how to have a good time. Remembering those days at LIMRA. Do something creative in his honor.

  3. To Layne and the entire Sheridan family,

My heart is broken over the passing of Al. Al hired me into LIMRA almost 40 years ago and was not only my first boss, but a mentor and a dear friend. So many good memories, including ski trips, golf events, as well as admiring his beer can collection! So many fun times at the LIMRA summer outings and holiday luncheons with Al. I had the pleasure of introducing many of my friends to Al and they all said, “what a great guy”! Yes, he was! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!
