Obituary

Albert John Sheridan, 78 of Goodyear, AZ died January 30, 2021, in Phoenix, AZ.  He was born August 5, 1942, to Philip and Marie Sheridan in Chicago, IL.

Al earned his bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University and his Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from Case Western Reserve University.

He spent the bulk of his professional career as a management consultant and Vice President at LIMRA International, a Windsor, CT based research and consulting organization serving the financial services industry.  A brilliant researcher, he thrived on helping companies use research to create a competitive advantage.  In the later stages of his career, his interests turned to regulatory compliance and he led the creation of several LIMRA services designed to help companies ensure that clients were treated fairly and ethically.

Upon Al’s retirement, LIMRA awarded him the inaugural Al Sheridan Award for excellence in product development.  This award has subsequently been presented to individuals or teams who have demonstrated remarkable accomplishments in product development.

Al loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer, skier, hiker, runner and sailor.  After retiring, he and his wife Layne traveled the world.  He visited over 40 countries on six continents and was looking forward to checking off the seventh continent, Antarctica, once the COVID pandemic was over.  An avid animal lover, he was partial to dogs and carried dog treats in his pocket when he traveled so he could get his “dog fix” even when he was halfway around the world.

As Parkinson’s Disease took away his ability to do his favorite physical activities, he turned to trading stock options to keep his brain engaged.  He worked on studying markets and refining his strategies seven days a week.

He is survived by his wife Layne; son Kevin and his wife Pam; grandchildren Jenna Sheridan and Patrick Sheridan; Greyson and Parker Clancy whom he considered his grandchildren; sister-in-law Kathy Sheridan; nephews Phil Sheridan (Ann), Dan Sheridan (Kristen), and Michael Sheridan (Jen); and his four-legged children Rowdy and Rocky.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Philip Sheridan.

A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a time to be determined.

The family suggests that donations be made to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.

We are so sorry that Al will no longer be with us.

We were blessed to be able to call him a friend. He always had a quick wit and we knew we could always depend on him to “call it like it is”, even if that meant taking an unpopular stance.

Renee and I are so thankful that we were able to reconnect with Layne and Al over the last few years rekindling our friendship rooted in CT and becoming neighbors we could share holiday dinners with. What a treat that has been for us.

RIP my friend. You departure will leave a hole.

  5. Rest in Peace, Al. The time we knew you in Utah was relatively short, but a privilege. Now you are free of the destruction and limitations of Parkinson’s Disease.
Our condolences to the family for your loss.
