Obituary

Mary Helen Thompson, “Nancy”, age 78 of Tonopah, AZ died March 24, 2020, in Tonopah, AZ. She was born July 23, 1941, in Worcester, MA to Thomas and Helen Loftus. Mary lived in Massachusetts for over 30 years, until a trip to Lake Havasu persuaded the family to move to Arizona. Though she left her native state, her native accent remained with her and brought great joy to those around her.

Mary had a large, loving, mother heart. She raised her blended family of children, both born and adopted, as well as 10 foster kids, 14 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, with unconditional love and a lot of good food. Costco was one of her favorite stores and she would load up her two refrigerators and freezer and was also known to make food boxes for her grandchildren. No one went without any necessity if she could help it.

She loved to celebrate! Birthdays and holidays were always an occasion to decorate and enjoy family. She had boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations, not to mention her collections of doves, Snow Babies, Santas, and Christmas villages.   The time she spent with family decorating as well as taking down was just as important as the celebration. She was a good listener and loved to be with all of her family.

Mary enjoyed being in nature. When her children and foster children were young, she and Tommy would take them camping in the mountains. She learned to see the unique beauty of Arizona on the back of Tommy’s motorcycle. As she got older, she enjoyed going to the Senior Center. A movie and lunch was always a great treat. When her health became more fragile, her fighting spirit was revealed. Her love for her family kept her strong until the very end. Her family’s love for her will never waver.

Mary is survived by her husband, Tommy Thompson; daughters, Theresa Fowler and Charlene Engel; sons, Mark Perron, John Perron, Bob Thompson, Ryan Thompson, and Joshua Thompson; sisters, Ann Hakala, and Patricia Doherty; brother, John Loftus; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Helen Loftus; sister, Marilyn Bondanza; and brothers, Thomas Loftus and Edward Loftus.

Services in April have been cancelled.  A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 18, 2020, at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S. Litchfield Road, Goodyear, AZ 85338. Condolences for the family may be left below.
