Obituary

It is with profound shock and sadness that we announce the passing of Louis Godin on Tuesday February 21, 2023 in Arizona at the age of 62 years. His wife Gaylene and sister Joanne were by his side.

He is survived by his devoted friend and loving wife of 30 years, Gaylene, his sister Joanne (Sonny) Dickson, brother Andre (Brenda) Auger, sister Denise (Silvio) Barletta, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends both near and far.

He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Theresa Godin, sister Suzanne Auger, brother Roger Auger, mother-in-law Marilyn MacKay, brother-in-law Kevin MacKay and his treasured dog Keeva.

Louis was born August 23,1960 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. In 1988, Louis moved to Calgary, Alberta and enjoyed a successful career in the group insurance industry.

After retirement in the fall of 2019, Louis spent the winter months in Goodyear, Arizona. He loved the active retirement lifestyle and although his retirement was cut short, Louis and Gaylene are blessed with wonderful memories and amazing friends.

Louis loved life and approached everything with a great endearing enthusiasm. He was gifted with a pure kind heart that always saw the good in people and the positive in situations, or the glass half full as he would say.

Louis had a warm and calming influence on others. Louis was Gaylene’s rock.

Louis loved his sports, with basketball and football being his favourites. Over the years, he attended many tournaments and games with family and friends, watched countless games on TV and enjoyed NFL Football Sundays in Calgary with Bob, Keeva, and Bob’s dog Chelsea.

Louis went all in on whatever his interest was. At times he was like a big kid especially when it came to toys and gadgets and anything to improve his golf game. Last year he developed a passion for collecting vinyl records and created a special place in Calgary for enjoying his quickly growing collection. One goal for his retirement was to learn piano and play the House of the Rising Sun.

In lieu of flowers, it would be Louis’ wish that donations be made to the charity that is closest to your heart.

Cremation and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

  1. Deb and I want to offer our condolences to Gaylene and your family.
Every time Louis and I met in the plus 15’s or any function he was always smiling and so pleasant.

He was a gentle soul with a great heart and will be missed by many friends and family.

Our heartfelt condolences Gaylene. We are so saddened by the loss of our very good friend. Louis was a ‘gentle giant’. He genuinely was one of the nicest people we have ever met and will miss him dearly. We are going to miss golfing with him, chilling out after golf with a cocktail, listening to him tell us about his newest gadget that he bought or newest Vinyl, watching football on Sundays while getting his invaluable fantasy football advice , all the love he gave to Chelsea and so many more memories that we have come to cherish over the years. He will never be forgotten.

    Love Barb & Bob.

Helena and I would like to our heartfelt condolences Gaylene. I met Louis years ago as he was my Account Executive at Manulife and we developed a friendship. I enjoyed going to a few Flames games with Louis, we even managed to attend a playoff game in Arizona when the Coyotes were playing the L.A. Kings. We were in shorts and tee-shirts because it was 100 degrees outside but inside it was like a meat locker. Louis took up golf in the latter years of his successful career. He struggled at first but he was determined to get better, and he did. I’m going to miss golfing with Louis in Arizona. A very good man taken far to soon. I know he will rest easy because Louis was such an easy going man in life. Rest in peace buddy.

Like everyone else Gaylene I was in disbelief that Louis had passed away so suddenly. As you know I lost Diane almost a year ago and my heart ❤️ goes out to you . You will find the strength .

Now for Louis , loved the guy !

I’ll will always remember our casual walk through Pearson Airport returning home to Cowtown and we were slowly making our way to our gate … , then unexpectedly we passed a Harvey’s Burgers restaurant and we both looked at each other , then came Louis boyish smile and we immediately did an “ about – face “ , and the rest is history.

    God Bless you Louis
