Obituary

Lavonda Carol Prescott of American Canyon, California passed away on June 27, 2021 from natural causes at the age of 84. Lavonda was born September 19, 1936 in Carney, Oklahoma to Howard and Emma Sipe. The family moved to Bakersfield, California in 1951 when Lavonda was 15.

The first of nine children, Lavonda developed a loving and compassionate heart by providing care for her siblings, a trait that was evident to all who knew her throughout her lifetime. Despite marrying young, Lavonda was widowed at the age of 24 with three children to care for. After remarrying and having two more children, she again faced immense hardship becoming a single parent to five children. Lavonda never again remarried but devoted her life to putting a roof over her family, food on the table, and teaching her children and generations to come that through their hard work and determination they could accomplish whatever they desired. Throughout her life this love shined most when caring for young children and family.

Lavonda was known to her family and friends as an Elvis lover, a dancer (early in her life), a story teller, and someone you could always count on to tell you about her first dog, Queen. And boy, could she laugh! There was seldom anything but a smile on her face. Lavonda was always willing to lend a helping hand, putting others needs before her own. In her later years she was very devoted to her Christian faith and her church.

Lavonda is survived by her children: Gary (Leita), Wenona (Lamine), Archie, Bryan (Milka). Siblings: Verlin(Pat), Elouise (Don), Alvin (Joyce), Sharon, Dennis (Dorothy), Kim (Lynn), Karl (Sharon). Also surviving Lavonda are 14 grand kids, 21great grand kids and 11 great great grand kids. Predeceasing her was her daughter, Peggy and sister, Katrina.

A beloved sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great and great great grandmother. To her, children are the most precious and key to the family. Our family has lost an irreplaceable matriarch and most loving woman. She will be missed dearly!

  1. Mom, you taught me by example to be the person I am. You will always be in my heart.
    I love you.

  2. My Dear Grandma
You have always been my most special friend. I can’t begin to express how much I’m already missing our daily conversations. Jameson is missing Grammy and talks about you all day. I wept as he cried. It broke my heart to have to tell him we can’t call because you’ve gone home with Jesus. As we pray we still talk to you. Just miss your sweet voice so much. My best friend. Rest in heavenly paradise. We’ll all be along shortly. Love you forever and ever my sweet Betty Button ❤

I remember my cousin Lavonda from my childhood, she was always one of the sweetest people I knew. She loved her family, and she was one of the strongest people I knew. Her love was the unselfish, put others first, kind of love. She leaves a wonderful legacy for her family. She will be missed.

  4. Grandma Lavonda,
You welcomed me into your family with open arms. I will always remember your kind words, beautiful smile and laugh. Love you and see you later
