Obituary

July 9th, 1958 – August 13th, 2022

Gene Leroy Lindquist was a loving and dedicated husband. A compassionate and understanding father, and an extremely caring goofball grandfather. Gene passed away in his home on August 13th, at the young age of 64. Born July 9th, 1958 Gene was born in Pendleton, OR to Melvin and Elaine Lindquist. The youngest son of three boys, Gene was raised in Hermiston, Oregon.

After graduating from Hermiston High School in 1978, Gene worked at Lamb Weston as a Production Line Mechanic till 1995 when he was hired at Hermiston Generating Plant as a Power Plant Control Room Operator. In 2010, Gene moved to Goodyear, Arizona where he worked for Salt River Project, Power Plant as a Control Room Operator.

From a very young age Gene’s father, Melvin, introduced him to fast cars and motorcycles. This was a passion that stayed with Gene his entire life and he shared these interests with his wife Barbara and daughter Meranda. They would routinely take motorcycle rides and trips with him all over Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. It was even a source of joy for him that he taught Meranda how to ride a motorcycle and loved going on rides with her. One of his dreams for many years was to own a Shelby Mustang which he ultimately achieved in 2016. Anyone who spoke to him about it would have seen the mischievous, almost childlike, smile he had when he drove it and talked about it. It was hard not to get caught in his excitement when he would rub his hands together and give you his mischievous grin. He loved spending time outdoors shooting rifles and handguns at Pepsi cans and dingers. A true man’s man, Gene was the type of guy who not only knew how to fix just about anything but found enjoyment in it. He was the guy you called if you needed to know how to fix something in the home, if you had car problems, or wanted to know what kind of stocks to invest in. His most endearing trait though was his calm demeanor. No matter how stressful or intense the situation was, Gene always had the ability to not only remain calm but keep those around him calm and bring about a sense of security that he had the situation handled.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, whom he was married 42 years; His mother Elaine, daughter Meranda, his four beautiful grandchildren Korvin, Aubriana, Lillian, and Lucas, and his oldest brother Jerry. He was preceded in death by his father Melvin and brother Randy.

Gene was one of best examples to me on what it ment to be a man and a husband. I had the honor of having him as a Father-in-Law but he always treated me like I was a son. I love and miss him dearly.

I can remember when I interviewed Gene for his job at Mesquite. I knew he was going to be a great employee and he was a fantastic employee. Gene was one of kindest guys I have ever met who would do anything for you. I always enjoyed talking to him and was very impressed with his shooting abilities. I saw him unload a pistol on a dinger while he was doing a quick draw and every bullet hit it! A week later and to my surprise, Gene comes to work and hands me two dingers he made for me so I could practice my shooting skills. That was a nice way of saying I don’t shoot very well! He was a great guy and will be missed by everyone. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. The world was a better place with Gene.
