Obituary

Mrs. Cheryl Ann Esau, 72, of Goodyear, Arizona died September 10, 2022 in Goodyear, Arizona. She was born September 13, 1949 in Columbia, Mississippi to Elzie and Ida May.

A loving wife of 48 years and devoted mother to four boys, Sherry was quite often on the go.  With an outgoing personality and a zest for life, she never had a stranger at her table. Loved by all her sons’ friends, she earned the nickname “Mama Esau”. With her southern hospitality and a love for cooking, everyone who came into our home was treated like family. Always having a true love for sports, Mama could tell you everything that was going on with our favorite teams (and what wasn’t going so well).

Her sense of humor was one of her greatest attributes. She knew what to say when you needed a smile or a good laugh.  We enjoyed many nights playing games and listening to music, Elvis and original rhythm and blues were two of her favorites. She touched anyone’s life who knew her, everyone has a story about Sherry. Fun fact, Larry, Sherry, Dustin and her brother Bob all share the same birthday of 9/13.

Sherry is survived by her husband, Larry A. Esau; sons Raymond Scott Esau, Dustin Alan Esau, Jeremey Adam Esau, and Joshua Aaron Esau; and her brother Robert May. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Kyrstin Esau, Kyle Morreti, Ashley Ivanoff, and Dustin Esau; and six great-grandchildren, Hailey Isham, Ryan Isham, Ellianna Ivanoff, Jackson Ivanoff, Titus Esau, and Paulyza Esau.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carolyn Finley, and brother David May.

A visitation will be held at 1pm on Saturday, September 24 at Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear, Arizona. The funeral service will begin at 2:30pm at Thompson Funeral Chapel.

The family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

  5. Ms. Sherry was a mother, also a friend and neighbor to us Elliott boys for a lifetime, but first and always she treated us as her own. Knowing the Esau’s, I know there is a Man, 4 sons that are men, and 1 amazing woman to hold them all together. Cheri for Sherry, cheers! Thank you for being there when we fought as siblings, thank you for being their when we graduated, thank you for being there…not for some of the moments, but for damn near all of them. Ms. Sherry, we love you. We miss you already and we thank you for everything you have done for us and for everything you have been to us for all of these years. See you in heaven.
