Obituary

Carol Scarso, age 77, died peacefully at home on May 6, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 30, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to Andrew and Mildred Smutko. Carol’s father was killed fighting in France during WWII, so Carol grew up with the added responsibilities of helping to care for her younger brothers and sisters.
In April 1958 Carol and her cousin accepted an invitation for a blind date with Frank Scarso and his friend Sal. Frank fell in love with Carol the moment he saw her. They went to Coney Island where Frank discovered that Carol was not only beautiful but that she had an adventurous spirit. She could convince Frank to try even the most daring rides. They became inseparable, their love grew and, in August 1959, they were married in Columbia, SC.
Working together as a perfect team, their individual abilities complimented each other. Whenever anyone asked for help, Carol and Frank were always there. Carol was meticulous, detail oriented and organized in every aspect of her life. For years she not only ran the household and family, but she would assist Frank nightly with the payroll and bookkeeping that his job required. Eventually, Carol would work with Frank as his secretary until their retirement in 1997.
Carol was a dedicated and involved mother. She was a Cadette Leader for Girl Scouts and a Den Mother for Cub Scouts. Carol valued her family and made sure that her children had wonderful memories of drive-in movies, fireworks at Rockaway Beach and exciting vacations to Florida and Niagara Falls. Family gatherings including summer barbecues and pool parties were some of her favorite activities.
Carol enjoyed needlepoint and was an expert seamstress. She made clothing for her children and frequently made her own gowns for formal events she attended with Frank. When grandchildren came, Carol began a new tradition of making everyone their own unique Christmas stocking. She was excited and proud to make her last two stockings for her twin great-grandchildren.
During their retirement years, Carol and Frank enjoyed traveling for vacation and to visit family and friends. Carol particularly enjoyed the anniversary cruises with her family. Closer to home, she looked forward to the weekly gatherings to play cards with “The Ladies”. She cherished her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Carol is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Frank Scarso, daughters JoAnn (Robert) LaCanfora and Carol Thomas, son Tony (Maria) Scarso, sisters Agnes Boyd and Jay Lella, brother Bill Price, four grandchildren: Christina Kuhl, Matthew LaCanfora, Olivia Thomas and Nicholas Thomas, and two great-grandchildren: Sloan and Max Kuhl. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Helen Watters and Sharon Englehardt, and brother Patrick Price.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 pm with a rosary at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S Litchfield Road, Goodyear, AZ 85338. A mass will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, May 13, 2019 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 13720 W Thomas Road, Avondale, AZ 85392.
