Obituary

Richard “Dick” James McDonagh, age 80 of Goodyear, AZ died surrounded by his family on January 20, 2019.  He was born June 10, 1938 in Toledo, OH, the only child of James and Elma McDonagh.  Dick was raised in Toledo and graduated from Macomber High School.  He worked as a welder for 50 years in the Local 50 plumbers and pipefitter’s union.  Precise and hardworking, he could build anything and fix anything.

Dick was dedicated to his family.  He worked hard to provide for any necessity his wife and children might have.  He taught his children the importance of integrity and an honest day’s living.  His example showed them what a husband should be.  His patience and calm demeanor allowed him to go with the flow in a busy household of children and various pets.

He loved being outdoors.  He enjoyed golfing, camping, boating, riding horses, shooting, even chopping wood.  He liked sharing his outdoor adventures with his family.  He especially loved to travel with his wife, Betty.  Together, they traveled to many states in the US.  After spending many trips out west, they fell in love with the west and chose Arizona as their retirement spot in 1998.  In addition to US travel, they took several trips overseas to Ireland, Scotland and Israel.

Dick is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty McDonagh (Hudanski); daughters, Tamara (James) de Jesus, Deborah (Jack) Kroninger, and Lori Stickley; son, Scott McDonagh; eight grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Elma McDonagh (Hum) and father, James McDonagh.

A visitation will be held at 12:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 26, 2019 at The Church of Litchfield Park, 300 N Old Litchfield Rd, Litchfield Park, AZ 85340.  The family suggests that donations be made to VisionTrust, 3710 Sinton Rd, Suite 100 Colorado Springs, CO  80907.

  1. Betty,
I worked with Dick on many jobs over the years. I am so glad that we got to see you and Dick this past summer. May the Lord bless, guide, comfort, and sustain the MCDONAGH family during this difficult time.

  2. It was an honor to have Dick as a friend. Enjoy the many times we had together at work and on the golf coarse. May the Lord comfort the MCDONAGH family during this difficult time.
    Love & Prayers,

  3. We always enjoyed Dick and Betty on their visits back home. I could always count on Dick having a good story and his humor made it more special. He was a good husband and father to his family and set a good example for all. He was also a dear friend to many and he will be missed. We were so glad and fortunate to have visited with Dick and Betty this past year with Rob and Kathy.

May God bless his family and comfort them.

    Reed

  4. So sorry to just find this out. It has been many years since I had last seen my cousin. His mother was my aunt. She was my mother’s closest sibling. Richard was the oldest of our cousins and I am next oldest. There was a time when we were all young when we were all close. We were a big family on our mother’s side. Remember those times well of great Christmases and holidays when we would all be together. Richard’s mother, my Aunt Elma was an artist, as was my mother, as am I. I took painting classes with Richard’s mother, my aunt. When we were just kids, his mother played the accordion, and my mother the piano. I remember those family get togethers of laughter and song and lots of love. Richard was a wonderful talented person and I’m so grateful to hear he had a good life and a loving family. I remember Scott when he was just a boy. So many years ago. May Richard rest in peace in the loving arms of our family who have gone before.
