Obituary

Shirley Ann Castor, age 83 of Goodyear, AZ died September 30, 2019, in Phoenix, AZ. She was born July 29, 1936, in Mifflin County, PA to Charles and Bessie Mae (Casner) Dunmire. She was a graduate of the Central Pennsylvania Business School and mastered the art of shorthand and could type 80 wpm on a manual typewriter. She worked for many years as an Executive Assistant, most notably for Pennsylvania State Senator George Wade.

Strong-willed and fiercely independent, Shirley was unafraid of anything.   She knew exactly what she wanted out of life and how to make it possible. She was cheerful and outgoing, a social butterfly that was known and loved by many. Her compassion motivated her to extend kindness to every person that she encountered. She was intensely protective of her children’s individualities and skillfully guided them to be their best selves.

Shirley enjoyed golf and traveling. She loved to sing and sang in the choir of nearly every church to which she belonged. She was instrumental in the development of a grass-green golf course in Curtis, NE. She was highly creative and took pleasure in cross-stitch, crocheting, and decorating her house for every season of the year.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Bob Castor; son Bradley C. Knepp, and daughter-in-law Wendy; daughter, Beth Ann (Castor) Bryan, son-in-law Mike; grandchildren, Mike Bryan, Jr., Zach Bryan, Peter Knepp; and great-grandchildren, Lillie and Carson. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sally and Janet; brother-in-law, Barney Wilson; and two cousins, Peggy and Joan.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00, Saturday, October 5, 2019, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 925 N. Sarival Avenue, Goodyear, AZ 85338. The family suggests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrier Project, https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.

  1. Mary says:

To the family, my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in the knowledge that God promises to end all suffering. Before long, God will wipe out every tear from our eyes, and “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things (will) have passed away.”(Rev. 21:3,4). May this promise from God give you comfort now and a real hope for the future. My deepest sympathy.
