Obituary

Wesley Daniel Ashlock, of Glendale, AZ died July 9, 2019 in Glendale, AZ at the age of 95. He was born August 20, 1923 in Doby Springs, OK to Harley and Sarah Ashlock. Wes grew up on a farm in OK during the depression. He moved with his family to Wichita, KS where he graduated from North High School. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. He was recalled to service during the Korean War.

Wes married his high school sweetheart, Harriett Ellen Rose on December 23, 1943, just before he went into the Navy. They lived in California and Hawaii before returning to Wichita to raise their family of three boys.

Wes moved his family to Tempe, AZ in 1959 for a job opportunity as a machinist with Air Research. He was a self-taught Master Machinist. In the 1970’s, Wes and Harriett, assisted by their sons, built an A-frame cabin from the ground up in the Clear Creek Pines subdivision in Happy Jack, AZ. They retired and lived there for many happy years.  Wes enjoyed being a handyman, helping neighbors, and creating many things from wood, including furniture, clocks, and keepsakes. He also enjoyed leather crafting. He was very active and high-ranking in both the Masonic Lodge and Shriners organization.

Wes was an amazing father and husband, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a fulltime caretaker for Harriett for over eight years after she suffered a debilitating stroke. He lent a hand to all who needed help. He became a father figure to some of his nieces and nephews when their fathers weren’t in their lives. He taught his boys how to be gentlemen and to love family and live to the fullest. He adored all of his grandkids and they adored him. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Wes is survived by his sons, Daniel E. (Patricia) Ashlock, and Kenneth L. (Heather) Ashlock, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Harriett; his parents, Harley and Sarah Ashlock; son, James C. Ashlock; brothers, Roy (Betty) Ashlock, Bill (Margaret) Ashlock; and sisters, Celinda (Roscoe) Kelsey and Nina Ogden.

  1. I can’t be there in person, but know that my heart is. Uncle Tubby was one of the good guys and I loved him with all my heart. It’s wonderful, the memories the mention of his name brings. Sunday’s at Grandma & Grandpa’s with all the boys and me. His visits to Newton to see me and my family. He came to visit us, when our first Grandchild was born. He and Aunt Harriet were a tremendous support system during troubled times. He was a very loving Uncle and my life is so much richer because he was in it. RIP UNCLE Tubby. Love, & prayers to his immediate family. You were so lucky to have him as Dad and Grandpa. I love you all.

GOD’s blessings and comfort be with you all,

  4. Sorry for the loss of your father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. Wes was always kind and gracious to me when Jim and I visited Arizona. He had a quick wit and loved to beat Jim at any game they were playing. May he Rest In Peace. Prayers and hugs to all.
