  3. Dear Susan, Lynn, Bernard, Philip, James, Cynthia, Anthony,

As the Director of Alumni Relations Emeritus at Saint Viator High School, I offer you the sympathy and prayers of the Saint Viator/Sacred Heart of Mary community. Our hearts go out to you as you move through your journey of grief, made more difficult by the timing during this holiday season. You are in our prayers as you share the stories, laugh and cry, and find ways to celebrate the life of your husband, your father, your brother, and the love you shared.

As I read the obituary and other Tribute Wall posts for Bernie, a man who served his country in Vietnam and who will be missed by everyone whose life he touched, I was reminded of an adaptation of a reading from the Book of Sirach.

Let us praise an illustrious man,
faithful to his family and friends, strong in his love.
At peace in his heart and his world,
he has left us his good name, and we recount his life of praiseworthy deeds.
A generous man his good works will never be forgotten.
Among his family and friends remains a rich inheritance born of him….
His name lives on from generation to generation.
We gather to sing his praises.
We proclaim his wisdom and love of life all our days.

Know that we are proud to “claim” Bernard as an alumnus. We will remember Bernie and celebrate the fact that he continues to be a member of our community at our annual Alumni Memorial Mass next November at Saint Viator High School in the Alumni Memorial Chapel. Information about this gathering is available at SaintViator.com in the Alumni section. As is our tradition, next October we will order a plaque with Bernie’s name to prayerfully honor him, along with other deceased alumni from Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary, on a wall in the chapel. Also, Bernie’s name will be listed in the “In Memoriam” section of the winter issue of our news magazine, A Lion for Life.

May God’s promise that life is changed, not ended, comfort you!
May the knowledge that your husband, your father, your brother, lives on in your goodness give you peace and hope!

Take care and God bless you with those gifts you most need!

  4. Bern’s personality and in particular his sense of humor could light up any room! We have such great memories, from wonderful dinners, family holidays, to last but not the least, our last visit to Arizona in the beginning of the year. These special times are very dear and will always be with us…

We are so glad Sue, that you and Bern made a “piece of heaven” in Arizona for yourselves. Your wonderful home and the many social events and gatherings the two of you attended made for a life & time worth treasuring… We are sure you are shouting “Cheers” from above, Bern! We know you and Sue had a great life and she is missing you more than we will ever be able to comprehend.

Bern, we can’t believe you are not among us anymore, though it does give us peace knowing your struggle is over and you are in the arms of angels.

Love you forever & we miss you Bern!

    Tony & Mette
