Obituary

Sara Lopez Ruiz, 84, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, passed away peacefully in her home on July 11, 2013. Sara was born on Feb. 28, 1929, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was a woman of deep, unwavering Christian faith, and it was in church where she met her loving husband of 61 years, Jesus Ruiz.  Sara and Jesus moved from El Paso, Texas, to what was then Waddell Ranch, Arizona, in 1952. They both worked long hours doing backbreaking work as farm laborers for several years. Sara also worked for many years later in life as a seamstress at Spring City Knitting Company in Glendale, Arizona. She was a member of the Iglesia Bautista de Antioquia congregation in Avondale, Arizona.  If you met Sara, you would notice one attribute immediately. She was a petite woman at just 4 feet, 10 inches tall. But, if you talk to those who were blessed to know her, they would tell you that for such a small woman, she made a huge impact on everyone around her.  That powerful, positive force was felt by her 12 children who she loved dearly and who she leaves behind in Arizona: David Ruiz of Goodyear; Ester Ruiz of Chandler; Samuel Ruiz of Litchfield Park; Elizabeth Ruiz of Buckeye; Marta Ruiz Brunwasser of Scottsdale; Ruben Ruiz of Swansea, Illinois; Leonardo Ruiz of Tempe; Ruth Ruiz Fischer of Phoenix; Isaac Ruiz of Glendale; Abel Ruiz of Litchfield Park; Roy Ruiz of Litchfield Park; and Andrew Ruiz of Avondale.  Although Sara had very little formal education, leaving school in the third grade to work to help support her family during the Depression, she was the driving force behind her children’s educational success. Because of Sara’s belief in the power and importance of education, her children achieved nine undergraduate degrees and six advanced degrees, including three juris doctorates and one doctoral degree.  In addition to her 12 children, Sara also leaves behind 22 grandchildren and15 great-grandchildren, who were the joys of her life; a sister, Cleofas Lizarraga; and a brother, Pedro Lopez.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus, and her parents, Gabino and Ester Lopez. Visitation is scheduled on July 18, 2013, at 9 a.m., with a memorial service immediately following at 10 a.m. at Skyway Church of the West Valley, 14900 W. Van Buren, Goodyear, Arizona.  Arrangements by Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear.
