Obituary

Jennie “Juanita” Zavala of Cashion, Arizona died July 21, 2023 at the age of 98. She was born December 19, 1924 in Patagonia, Arizona to Francisco Lopez and Maria Plomoso both of whom predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. Zavala and son, Joseph Zavala. She is survived by her children: Lucy Swanger, Richard Zavala, and Virginia Zavala, and her sister: Francisca Mendoza. She is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Jennie and Raymond met at a dance in Mesa, Arizona. For him, it was love at first sight and he followed her around Mesa. He even tried to work with her in the cotton field so he could talk to her, but she was too good at her job and he couldn’t keep up. But it was a match that was meant to be. Jennie and Raymond were married on November 12, 1950 and together they raised their four children. Jennie was so proud that she was able to be home for her children when they returned from school. She was very family oriented and loved spending time with them. She was always worried about her family. She would make sure they had plenty to eat and drink. Making food for her family was just one way she showed her love. She also made sure her children showed courtesy and had good manners. She would often check on them late in the night as they slept. If there were storms, she would even sleep in their room with them.
In her free time, she loved to crochet doilies, made the girls some clothes, and she also liked a good game of BINGO. Jennie liked to listen to mariachi music and Spanish ballads. When the heat of the valley became too much, she would travel to Flagstaff to cool off.
Jennie was a devout Catholic. She made sure to pass her Faith in God to her children and grandchildren. Besides her family, her Faith is what gave her strength and joy. Though we know that she is at peace in heaven, our heart still miss her cheerful nature, loving mothering, and sweet soul.
