Vicente “Tata” Quihuis, 85, of Mesa, AZ passed away April 27, 2014 in Mesa, AZ surrounded by his family. He was born April 19, 1929 in Tucson, AZ to Juan Miguel and Ramona Quihuis.
He is survived by his daughters Isabel, Albertina, Ramona, Clara, Joe, Vincent, Freddy, Michael and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Irene, son Paul, sister Florence, and brother Trinidad.
Visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday, April 30th at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S. Litchfield Rd., Goodyear, AZ 85338. Rev. Boyd Lee Mefford, 94 of Avondale, AZ entered into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, April 25, 2014 in Glendale, AZ surrounded by his family. He was born January 10, 1920 to Ervin Mefford and Lettie (Jolley) Mefford in Titusville, Florida. He served in the Army Air Force in WWII as a 409 Medical Tech. His decorations were American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was an Evangelist and Ministered at Calvary Temple Pentecostal Church in Avondale. He retired from Anderson Clayton after 30 years. He was a Faithful Servant of the Lord his entire life. He is preceded in death by his parents Ervin Mefford and Lettie Mefford and his four brothers Worth, Carroll, Alonzo, and Aubrey. He is survived by his loving wife Lillian of 57 years that he called his “Angel”. His son Stephen (Janinne), his daughters Susan Wood (Randy) and Lisa Mefford, two brothers Robert (CA) and Don (Ark). Nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, May 2nd at First Southern Baptist Church, 1001 N. Jesus “Chuchi” Chacon, 25, of Avondale, AZ died April 23, 2014 in Goodyear, AZ. He was born December 7, 1988 in Phoenix, AZ to Jesus Chacon and Frances Acosta. Rolando “Abel” Fernandez, 46, of Goodyear, formerly of La Puente, CA, died April 22, 2014 in Goodyear of ALS. He was born May 24, 1967 in Los Angeles, CA to Rolando Fernandez and Magdalena Andrade.
He was an accomplished metal connoisseur; thrash drummer, collaborator, musical spearhead, mentor, advisor, beloved son, beloved brother and congregator of musical talent. He is survived by his wife Christina Mimassi; brothers Jesse, Victor, Gerardo, Ray, and Chris Andrade; parents Magdalena and Jesus Andrade.

Vernon Leroy Slaughter Jr., 63, of Goodyear, AZ died April 22, 2014 in Sun City, AZ. He was born November 10, 1950 in Omaha, NE to Vernon L. Sr. and Jeanette Slaughter. Vernon’s joy in life was his music and his two sons Christopher and Michael Slaughter. He is survived by his sisters: Laura Ann Slaughter, Crystal L. Slaughter, Elizabeth Slaughter-Payne (Nathaniel), Terry L. Sheppard-Phillips, and Jeanette Sheppard.; brothers: David E. Slaughter (Jackie), Larry Sheppard (Matilda), and Carl W. Sheppard (Joyce); and a host of nephews, nieces, and uncles Rev. David Triplett, Ward Triplett and Leon Triplett (Elizabeth). He was preceded in death by his father Vernon L. Slaughter, mother Jeanette Slaughter, sisters Vanessa Slaughter and Lorraine Sheppard, brother A-Lord (Bobby) Sheppard. Stevens, Lavaun and Scott
Scott Stevens passed away at the age of 53 on April 2, 2014, in Bisbee, Arizona, after succumbing to complications from Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which he had been battling since 1999. He left behind his father Clark Stevens (Jo Beth); mother Lavaun Stevens; his three sisters and their spouses, Vickie Stevens (Steve), Catherine Stevens-Meraz (Henry), and Jennifer Cartledge (Frank); seven beloved nieces and nephews, Stacie (Ray) Armenta, Caleb Griffith, Alyssa Toledo, Marissa Meraz, Angelique Iglesias, Mateo Iglesias, and Ramon Armenta, as well as, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, & close friends.
Scott attended schools in Iowa, where he won numerous awards in swimming, football, wrestling, and track. Scott went on to graduate from Northeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s degree in computer Science. He then worked for Southwestern Bell/AT&T in St. Louis, Missouri, as a computer programmer for over 20 years. He eventually relocated to Arizona to be closer to his immediate family, who tended to his care during his final years, along with his beloved caregivers.
Scott loved to laugh, and he will forever be remembered for his beautiful smile, his sense of humor, and his generous spirit. He will also be remembered for the dignity and courage he showed each and everyday during times of great adversity. Scott loved his friends and family, he cherished his Friday night poker games with the “guys,” he mentored others with MS, and he truly was an inspiration to those who knew him.
Lavaun Stevens, age 78, went home to be with Jesus after an extended illness on April 13, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Maude Barrett, her brother, Virgil Barrett, her brother-in-law, Ken Pruitt, and her son, Scott Stevens. She leaves behind three siblings, Clare (Susanna) Barrett, Charlie (Suzanne) Barrett, Lurene Pruitt, two sister-in-laws Dorothy Barrett & Mary Stevens, and a brother-in-law Ron Stevens; three daughters and their spouses; Vickie Stevens (Steve), Catherine Stevens-Meraz (Henry), and Jennifer Cartledge (Frank); seven beloved grandchildren, Stacie (Ray) Armenta, Caleb Griffith, Alyssa Toledo, Marissa Meraz, Angelique Iglesias, Mateo Iglesias, and Ramon Armenta. She also leaves behind her ex-husband & friend, Clark Stevens, as well as, numerous nieces & nephews.
Lavaun attended primary schools in Iowa, and went on to become a registered nurse after graduating from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. She worked in various capacities in the nursing field throughout her adult life, and was actively involved in rendering support to those suffering from HIV/AIDS, having started one of the first support groups in Iowa. She eventually left the nursing field and worked as a sorority mother for numerous years at the Alpha Phi Sorority at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lavaun is most known for her kindness, compassion, and giving spirit. She often put the needs of others above herself, especially those of her children. She had a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and a genuine care and concern for all people. She loved arts and crafts, especially card stamping with her sister, Lurene, and her sister-in-law, Dorothy. She loved spending time with her family, she was an avid sports fan, and she adored going to thrift stores with her children.
The family will greatly miss Lavaun and Scott’s laughter, hugs, and beautiful smiles, but we are comforted by the fact they are both in their heavenly homes, with their new heavenly bodies, and there is no more suffering because they are in the loving arms of their Lord and Savior–Jesus Christ. Although we are saddened by the loss of our loved ones, we look forward to the day we will be reunited with them, and we all live together in our forever home.

Lupe Cuen Flores, 86, of Tolleson, AZ passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in the loving care of her family. She was born to Rosalia and Luis Cuen on April 20, 1927 in Tolleson, AZ. She met and fell in love with her husband, Joe Flores, of 66 years. They had 6 children, Gloria, Joe, Larry, Richard, Frank, and Michael. She was hard-working, loving, and enjoyed her family and life. She leaves behind her husband Joe Flores; children: Gloria Flores, Joe (Debbie) Flores, Larry (Maria) Flores, Richard (Rose) Flores, Frank (Pat) Flores; Michael (Patty) Flores; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and grandson, Mikey. She will celebrate her 87th birthday with Our Lord on Easter Sunday. Sharey Lee Mendelson, 65, of Goodyear, AZ died April 8, 2014. She was born February 8, 1949 in Phoenix, AZ to John Robert Walston and Margaret Ethington Walston. Linda Clark, 66, of Goodyear, AZ died April 4, 2014 in Phoenix, AZ of Peritoneal Cancer. She was born October 15, 1947 in Seneca, Kansas to Herbert and Bessie Kling. Mrs. Clark was an Elementary school teacher, a budding photographer, a past realtor, and a middle school science teacher. Max Allen Outram, 64, of Goodyear, AZ died March 31, 2014 at home. He was born December 14, 1949 in Urbana, Ohio to Oram and Louise Outram. He moved to Arizona in September of 1971. He was a retired grocery/retail clerk. Max served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged March 8, 1974. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church and retired from the UFCW Executive Board. Max is survived by his wife Susan; sons Christopher (Leah), Stephen (Donielle), Nicholas (Stefanie); daughters Patricia, Deborah (Jason); brother Charles (Nellie); and ten grandchildren. David “Dave” Charles Rollins, 74, of Morristown, AZ passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014. He was born January 8, 1940 in Shelby, North Carolina to Kenneth and Mary Rollins.
Dave enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1956 after graduating from Shelby High School. After serving his four-year term, Dave obtained a position at North American Rockwell, where he worked on the Apollo Rocket program. Dave also worked at General Dynamics, F&B Manufacturing, and C&C Manufacturing. Dave loved the outdoors, especially Lake Pleasant, where he worked for 10 years.
Dave is survived by wife, Linda; daughters, Cari Bellairs, Kim Daulton, Cindy Slaughter; sons, Greg Rollins, Mark Peters; sisters, Phyllis Bivins, Margaret Van Dyke, Mary Sue Cline, Cherry Michael; brother, Thom Rollins; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Carl Rollins; and daughter Gayle Walczyk.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the church where Dave was raised, Hoyle Memorial United Methodist Church in Shelby, NC on June 7th, 2014.
